Math Monkey is an educational brand from the USA. Our founder, Ms Kirsten Fisch, started the first Math Monkey center in 2006. Math Monkey curriculum is inspired by ancient India, a top speed of mental arithmetic system – Vedic Math. With a curriculum that understands kids, math is fun at Math Monkey. By engaging learners through the use of our game-based program, we are able to introduce challenging material to our math monkeys and help them build mental agility and concentration skills.
Vedic math, simply put, is an approach to mathematics that allows children to perform calculations mentally with great accuracy, simplicity, and speed. For your child, it means having an advantage in mathematics and logic that will help them to excel in the classroom and beyond.
Any complicated math problems is based on certain simple principles. The Vedic system allows children to use these principles to simplify a math problem to a level that they can master.
Kumon, E.nopi, Olympic, Selin, Abacus, Kwik Math, So-In and Math Monkey are the most common mathematics courses for children in Hong Kong education center. All of them are having their unique teaching methods and Math Monkey is the only one math education center that teaches Vedic Math and plays game in the lesson.
There are many differences. First, we are a game based program and the children have fun while interacting with other children. Fun is the key to learning! Second, we are based on the ancient Indian art of Vedic Math. The short cuts used to open the door to a new way of learning for children. Third, our curriculum is coordinated the Existing Hong Kong Primary School Curriculum.
Math Monkey is not tutoring. Regular tutoring class emphasise repetition in math problems, but not improving students' ability in understanding math. Math monkey does not encourage repeating in math; but improving students' ability in understanding math through Vedic Math. Using games along with the Vedic techniques, children are honing their mathematical skills and understanding in a fun environment.
Many children find one on one tutoring boring. We have seen students embarrassed to say that they are tutored in math. Children cannot interact with other children in one on one tutoring. At Math Monkey, our students are proud to attend classes. Children attend classes where they make friends, play games and build confidence.
Because we are an enrichment program and not a traditional tutoring program, we are measuring various pieces of information, some outside simple quantitative indicators. Each session begins with a skills assessment developed to measure the starting knowledge of each child in each particular class. A second assessment is given at class number sixteen in order to measure the effectiveness of the class, the child’s understanding of the material covered, as well as to make recommendations for placement during the next sessions. More importantly, we encourage parental feedback on intangible measurements such as enjoyment of doing homework, completion of assignments and self-esteem in peer interactions. The goal is to create joy in learning.
Math Monkey is designed for children over 5 years old. We do not focus of any child’s particular weaknesses; we work to enhance overall mathematical understanding in math.
Math Monkey program is a game-based problem along with Vedic Math techniques to keep kids interested in math. After the kids learned a concept, they then play interactive games that help them hone their skills. Building in previous knowledge to continue learning is the cornerstone of the Math Monkey program.
Prior to enrollment, your children will participate in an assessment test that will help us determine the best starting placement for them. This skill assessment consists of a few simple math questions. We value the importance of placing your children in an appropriated level, and therefore never charge a fee for the pre-enrollment assessment.
Even children who are already good at math find Math Monkey program challenging and interesting due to our Vedic Math program. Vedic math teaches children how to think about math by using language rather than symbols. For example, children are asked to think about math in terms of "one more than the one before," "all from 9 and the last from 10," and "crosswise and vertically." This proven system allows a more open-ended approach to solving problems, thus giving children the ability to apply various techniques to the same problem. This gives them the confidence and skills necessary to excel inside the classroom and beyond.
Math Monkey programs suit every child. While we do not focus in any child’s deficiencies, the supportive environment that we strive to create, allows all children to learn. Because Vedic math teaches not only math techniques but also knowledge to solve different problems. It is important to note that Math Monkey is not tutoring. We are a game-based program that children would find learning math interesting. We even have theme weeks where the children are encouraged to dress up. Even the classroom will be designed to stimulate their imagination and to encourage learning.
